Statutory and Canonical Guidance for the Development of Denominational Provision in VA Schools

These Inspections are carried out by an Inspector(s) appointed by the Bishop and Trustees of Nottingham Diocese and with the Diocesan Education Service in accordance with Section 47/48 of the 2005 Education Act, and Codes n.804 and 806 of the Code of Canon Law (1983).

The process of the inspection is in keeping with the vision, guidelines and policies of the Bishop and Trustees of Nottingham Diocese and the Diocesan Education Service.

The framework used is that agreed by the Bishop of the Diocese and the Diocesan Education Service, set out in the Guidelines for the Inspection of the denominal nature of the school and of the curriculum Religious Education in a Catholic Voluntary Aided school.

It is based on the common core framework approved by National Board of Religious Inspectors and Advisers (NBRIA)

The inspections are carried out as close to the Section 5 OfSTED contracted Inspection, with the fullest possible cooperation based on a nationally agreed protocol.

The inspection is undertaken to report on:

Part A:
The Denominal Nature of the school as a Catholic community

Seven specific areas of school life are to be addressed:

  1. How effective are the leadership and management in developing the Catholic life of the school?
  2. How good is the quality of Collective Worship?
  3. How good is the provision for Community Cohesion?
  4. How well do learners achieve?
  5. How effective are teaching and learning?
  6. How well does the Religious Education curriculum meet the needs and interests of learners?
  7. How effective are leadership and management in raising achievement and supporting all learners in Religious Education?


Part B:
Curriculum Religious Education

How effective and efficient is the provison of Catholic education in meeting the needs of learners and why?

  • the overall effectiveness of the Catholic life of the school/ college and its provison for community cohesion;
  • the overall effectiveness of the provision for the Catholic Religious Education curriculum, it's main strengths and areas for development;
  • the effectiveness of any steps taken to promote improvement since the last inspection
