Case Studies

We are always on the lookout for case studies which we can publish on our website to show colleagues how some schools have tackled particular building and capital projects successfully.  Several schools have had major projects this year and it would be helpful to see how the LCVAP and DFC funding has been used to good effect.  If your school has had work done to address a particular issue and you would like to share your experience (and maybe show off the result!) please visit our website for a copy of the proforma to use this link and select CaseStudyStructure.ppt.  Once you have completed the proforma, give it a name, save it and e-mail it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Capital Spending 2012 - VA Schools and Academies

The Secretary of State has announced details of the allocations for capital works in VA Schools and Academies for the financial year 2012/13.

DFC remains at the same rate as 2011/12 ie £4,000 plus £13.50 per pupil in Primary Schools and £4,000 plus £20.25 per pupil in secondary schools (figures to be confirmed after the January census).  These figures include VAT for VA Schools.

LCVAP will continue for a further year and the allocations are more or less at the same rate as in previous years although some reductions have been made to account for any schools which have or which intend to convert to academies in the coming year.

A total of £276m has been made available for capital maintenance in academies although details of how to access this funding have yet to be confirmed.

£104m has been made available for capital works in Sixth Form Colleges.

In addition, all Local Authorities have received an allocation for Basic Need and must include all schools, regardless of status, in their spending plans.

Mr Gove has indicated that he will respond to the consultation on the recommendations made by the James Review in January 2012.

Improving Mobile Classrooms

Temporary Mobile Classrooms often are neither temporary or mobile and although they meet a need in the first instance, they have a habit of remaining on site for longer than anticipated.

Eventually, these classrooms become a maintenance problem and can look drab or univiting.  All Saints' School, Mansfield has nineteen such classrooms in eleven separate buildings some of which are nearly twenty five years old.  During the first part of 2010, the school undertook a project to refurbish and in some cases remodel these buldings as well as trying to improve the landscaping around them.

The result is shown in the Case Study attached.

For further details contact me at the Diocesan Centre.

Asset Management Plans

Schools are reminded that the buildings in which they operate are owned by the Trustees of the diocese and therefore any work done to them should be approved by the diocese.  It is also important that when work has been completed, the diocese is aware of what has been done, whether the work has been funded by LCVAP, DFC or other funding streams.  If you have any building work carried out at your school, whether it be a new development or a repair, please let Ken Daly know so that our records can be kept up to date.  The Local Authority should also be made aware of any changes to the layout of the building or re-siting of services, etc.

The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, that a man took and sowed in his field.  It is smaller than all other seeds, but once it has fully grown, it is bigger than any garden plant; like a tree, the birds come and rest in its branches. Matthew 13:31-32
