Home to School Transport

Over the last few years we have seen the gradual errosion of the discretionary home to school transport that Local Authorites have always provided so that parents can choose a Catholic school for their children.  Charges have been introduced and increased meaning that some families are faced with the real prospect of not being able to afford to send their chidlren to a Catholic school.  Some Local Authorities are now consulting about the complete removal of bus routes to some of our diocesan schools.  Should this happen it could have a severely detrimental impact on the the number of children attending our schools.  Some schools have as many as two-thirds of their pupils bussed into school.

Leicestershires consultation, open now, can be found here.

Parents and parishioners are encouraged to write to their MP and local councillors to make their views known.  For details on how to contact your MP click here.

A campaign Toolkit is attached below.

The Briars Youth Retreat Centre

Does your school currently embrace the opportunity of a retreat experience for your students?  Set in the village of Crich, Derbyshire, The Briars is the youth retreat centre for our Roman Catholic Diocese of Nottingham.  For schools, The Briars offers retreat programmes for year 6 through to year 13 students.  Our programmes enable students to come away from their usual environment so that they may discover community, come to a friendship with Christ and a deeper awareness of themselves.  We can design the programme to meet the needs of your students, providing a balance of leisure activities, prayer and group work, lead by the Briars youth team and Programme Leader.  Please visit our website for further information www.ndcys.com.

Due to several regular schools and groups changing their planned retreats the following dates are available for new bookings for the year ahead:

Fri 6th – Sun 8th January 2012:  Weekend to share with Yr 11 grp
Fri 27th – Sun 29th January 2012: Full weekend

CES Census

The CES Census launched officially on Monday 28th February.  All schools should now submit their completed Census returns. For further information, including the support timetable, and to download our recently revised Guidance documents, please visit the CES website.  If you do not know your FilesAnywhere login password, please contact your diocesan census representative.  If you require assistance with completing your return, please contact Robert Rushworth at CES during the two week time slot allocated to your diocese.  Contact details for Robert Rushworth are as follows: Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Please support the CES by completing their Census for your school.  It is vital that the CES have up to date and complete information about Catholic Schools nationally.  It informs their very valuable work in negotiating on all our behalf’s with Ministers, Academies and the EBacc being two very important and recent examples.  Nottingham Diocesan Education Service is aiming for 100% returns from our schools this year.  Thank you for your support with this.

The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, that a man took and sowed in his field.  It is smaller than all other seeds, but once it has fully grown, it is bigger than any garden plant; like a tree, the birds come and rest in its branches. Matthew 13:31-32
