Academies - May 2011

Bishop Malcolm and the Trustees of the Diocese of Nottingham have given their ‘in principle’ consent for the conversion of Catholic Schools in our Diocese to academy status should this be considered right for the children and families served by the schools.

The consent is given on the basis of the proposed model; that is, multi-academy trusts of families of schools (secondary school and partner primary schools) working with an umbrella Diocesan Shared Company.  (Consent has not been given for individual schools to convert to academy status on their own.)

A school may decide to remain as a Voluntary Aided Catholic School (i.e. no change) and will continue to be supported by the Diocesan Education Service, as it is now.  Others may choose to form a multi-academy trust or federation with the family of schools.  The decision remains entirely that of the governing body of each school.

It is important that governors and headteachers in each cluster of schools continue talking and exploring the issues together so that the right decisions are made for the children and communities they serve.  This will depend very much on local circumstances.

It is also important to remember the words of Bishop Malcolm back in January, “Maintain a unity within the Diocese – if it is right for a [group of] schools to become an Academy others should not be acrimonious – this should be the spirit of the discussions and the future of education in the Diocese.”

The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, that a man took and sowed in his field.  It is smaller than all other seeds, but once it has fully grown, it is bigger than any garden plant; like a tree, the birds come and rest in its branches. Matthew 13:31-32
